Book Excerpt from Cross Roads

19 Nov

Today no interview, but a snippet instead! This time from a YA urban fantasy / action adventure book called “Cross Roads”. Enjoy!!

Book Excerpt

The next morning, Decker sat in his black sedan hidden by its tinted windows. The information he had received from the tablet led him to the Garden Way Hotel. The hotel was new in the city on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Decker held a camera in his hands like a photojournalist on assignment. He had taken pictures of everyone who had entered the hotel but only construction workers had entered.

Decker had been in place across from the hotel since dawn. Earlier that morning he had managed to place security cameras near the other entrances that fed directly into his computer. His laptop sat next to him in the passenger seat. Decker had views of the docking and loading area as well as the other entrances of the hotel. It was past eleven o’clock when Decker finally saw activity that interested him. A silver sedan pulled up in from of the hotel. The driver hurried out and opened the rear passenger door. The man who emerged from the backseat was tall, thin and had blonde hair that had been neatly combed back. He wore an expensive suit and a gray long coat. He looked to be in his late thirties and wore dark shades. Decker immediately recognized him and lowered the camera away from his face. His mouth gaped slightly.

“Linus.” he said aloud to himself as if to confirm what his eyes had just witnessed. He quickly raised the camera and rapidly took pictures. The driver led Linus inside. Decker made sure to get a picture of the car and

the plates as well. Decker was certain that whatever was going to happen would take place in this hotel and soon. He quickly turned his attention to his laptop and saw guards taking position at the entrances and securing the perimeter of the hotel.

Decker reached into his pocket and retrieved his cellphone. He hit a speed dial number and the phone picked up on the second ring. No one spoke on the other end. They didn’t have to.

“Confirmed. It’s Linus alright. The Garden Way Hotel.”

“Roger that. Over and out.” replied the deep male voice on the opposite end.

Decker disconnected the call. Now, like a predator hunting its prey, Decker would play the waiting game with his target until it was time to strike.

Book Excerpt from Journal of a South African Zombie Apocalypse

7 Nov

I’m hosting an excerpt today for the book tour for YA horror / dystopian “Journal of a South African Zombie Apocalypse”.

Book Excerpt

There was a brief silence before Katlego finally spoke.

‘Okay, everyone ready?’

We had our weapons drawn. Rik and I had our spears and Pa was gripping his crowbar. Dirk had pulled out his massive hunting knife.

‘On the count of three, we step into the alley. Spread out evenly to draw them apart. Take out the brain and put them down… fast. ‘

We nodded and, on three, we fanned out into the alley. They knew we were there immediately and suddenly their docile shuffling turned into a determined walk towards us. Ironically, one of the lady zombies headed straight for me. She was dressed in a dark blue uniform and I soon realised she must have been a nurse.

The blue pants were now ripped and stained, and her eyes were a dark red, with dry blood caked around the sockets. My heart started racing again. I kept repeating don’t be scared, don’t be scared in my head, and tried to remember Pa’s words about using fear to survive. Taking a deep breath, I charged at Nurse Zombie with my spear, aiming for below the chin. I came in a little too fast and got the angle wrong. The spear pierced under her chin, but came out by her ear, totally missing the brain.

The spear was lodged and it was like I had a zombie on a lead. She tried to move in every direction, but I fought her, pushing and pulling. What now?

I decided I needed to get the spear loose, so using all my strength, I pushed, channelling all the power in my legs like a rugby player in a scrum. I started to jog, forcing her to reel backwards. Then I suddenly stopped. Nurse Zombie toppled backwards and her weight let me pull the spear loose. As she landed on her back I jumped forward, plunging the spear through her left eye. Lucky shot, but it worked. I spun around, hoping Pa had seen my handiwork, but it looked like everyone had been concentrating on their own kill. Pa’s eyes met mine.

‘You win?’

I nodded and smiled.

Promo Post The Age of Amy: Channel ’63

3 Nov

Another excerpt today, this time from YA novel “The Age of Amy: Channel ’63”. Enjoy!

Book Excerpt

“I quit!” I shouted, my shrill voice echoing through the courtroom. “I resign from this family!”
“Please take your seat, Amy,” said Judge Higgins. “Your theatrics have been noted, but you are in Family Court, not an episode of Law & Order.”
The judge shuffled a pile of legal documents on his tall desk, then set aside the one that prompted the hearing in the first place: Petition for Declaration of Emancipation of a Minor. State law permits minor children, with unresolved parental issues, to leave home and live with someone else. I had filed the papers on my own, with no help from anyone.
What they basically said was that I wanted to be free to live on my own; to be liberated from playing the dutiful daughter; to be released from the grip of my controlling parents. In simpler terms: I wanted a divorce from my family.
It was a bold move to make, especially for a sixteen-year-old.
The August sun shined through the tall windows onto an empty jury box. On this day, no testimony would be given from the witness stand. There were no lawyers, no court reporters, nor spectators in the gallery. The judge didn’t even have a gavel.
My mom and dad sat at a long table normally reserved for high-powered attorneys. I sat at the same table, a few empty chairs down from them. After all, they were the bad guys, not me.
“As to why you are all here,” said the judge, “I have called this hearing to see if this issue can’t be resolved before proceeding further.”
My dad raised his hand and rose to his feet. “What’s the point?” he said. “We are all in agreement in this matter.”
“Absolutely,” added my mother. “Amy wants to move out, and I for one don’t plan to stand in her way.”
“I understand that,” said Judge Higgins, “but before I can issue a ruling, the laws of this state and the Department of Social Services mandate that the court shall first attempt to mitigate the situation, in accordance with Family Code Regulations.”
Legal mumbo jumbo! The “situation” was clear. I no longer wanted to share my life with my parents, and they made no bones about not wanting me around.

For 16-year-old Amy, it’s the perfect escape from her own time, and the hardships of teenage life in the 21st century.

Things get complicated when Amy falls for a teenage boy in the 60s. Trying to build a relationship across time proves maddening, especially when computers bleep any language that might impact the future. Happily, Amy acquires a “magic clicker” which defeats this annoying restriction. But gaining the ability to speak freely comes with a heavy responsibility: Amy now has the power to alter history!

She struggles to be mindful of her speech, but finds the temptation to reverse the mistakes of the past irresistible. It is November, 1963 on the other side of the TV screen, and President Kennedy is about to be assassinated. Knowing the details of that tragic event, Amy hatches a dangerous plot to save the 35th president, unaware of the deadly consequences facing her long-ago friend, who must carry it out.

Book Excerpt Deviation

11 Oct

I’m hosting a snippet today from a young adult dystopian novel called “Deviation”. The snippet features a kiss scene, so I’m sure you’ll all enjoy it. *wink wink*

Book Excerpt

“I’m going to kiss you,” he warned me.

“Don’t . . . ” I answered weakly as his fingers rested on the back of my neck and his thumb softly traced my cheek.

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t . . . stop.” What was I saying? Was I telling him to stop or not to stop?I wasn’t sure that my mind and heart were listening to one another.

Whatever the meaning of my mutterings, Ozzy took it as an invitation. He brushed his lips against mine and I closed my eyes, letting his mouth leave soft, smoldering, caresses on my lips. The light brushing of skin on skin mingling with hot breath was intoxicating and made me feel lightheaded. I tried to tell myself it was just the concussion and not a genuine reaction to the infuriating boy I couldn’t seem to say no to. At least not successfully.

Ozzy’s mouth took its time exploring me, trailing down my neck, across my jaw, and then back where it had started. When I reached up to thread my hand into his hair, I briefly felt him smile against my lips. This was nothing like any kiss I’d had before. This was perfect. His hands moved down over my shoulders, his arms wrapping around my back to pull me close. My breathing stuttered and became desperate as he continued to kiss me . . . gently . . . passionately . . . skillfully.

A little too skillfully.

How many other girls had he kissed just like this? Probably lots.

Probably Quinnie.

And that killed the mood. I turned my head away and pushed on his chest to create some distance.

“What’s wrong?” he murmured.

“I’ve had enough.” Lie.

“Are you sure?” Ozzy asked, trying to catch my mouth with his again.

“Totally sure.” Another lie. And another push to create more distance between us.

“Maybe I could convince you otherwise,” Ozzy suggested, leaning forward, brushing his lips against mine, his breath leaving a trail of warm promises along my mouth.

I straightened my arm to keep him a safe distance away. Safe enough that I wouldn’t be tempted. “Not necessary,” I struggled to keep my willpower strong and the tremor out of my voice. “You weren’t that great the first time around.” The lie of my lifetime.

Ozzy backed away from me, the surprise on his face was quickly replaced by intrigued curiosity. I expected to see annoyance, not a smile. But there it was, a cocky smile. It seemed impossible to offend him.

“Well, I’ll take that as a challenge,” he announced.

Interview for the book tour for Cameo

26 Sep

Today’s stop is an interview for the book tour for YA thriller / romance novel “Cameo”. I hope you enjoy the interview! I certainly had a blast reading through the author’s responses.

The Interview

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I like to do yoga. Lately I’ve been into nature walks for inspiration. I did one today and came home revved up for Broken part 2 – so crazy. I go back and forth between making music for my soundtracks and writing my drafts. I’m trying to find time to go back to horseback riding. It’s tough in New York City to find a place that’s not an hour plus outside the city. I now need that hour to write.

What is your role in the story?

This is an interesting question. Thank you for posing this. Very clever. I feel like my role in the story is to be the voice of the supporting characters as they interact and live with the main character.

What is your favorite hobby?

Horseback riding. I miss it like crazy.

What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

I think Nia’s main issue is trust and the story almost makes her trust issues worst . I feel like she has to overcome that in order to really solve her dilemma.

If you could make one wish, what would it be?

I would wish that we could live in better harmony with animals so that the endangered animal list could become extinct. We have such a huge impact on the environment with no concern for how other animals in the food chain are effected.

She was just so sad that it hurt.

What is your favorite hobby?
I collect spiritual stones and I watch Ghost Adventures.

What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?
I feel really bad about that, see I talked Annie into sneaking into the old Caldwell School, but the then something really bad happened. The spirit started haunting her. Not the rest of us, just her. Now I’m trying to figure out a way to undo it and I’m scared. Because I’m afraid it’s going to kill her. If anything happens to Annie….I can’t even talk about it.
If you could make one wish, what would it be?
That we’d never gone into the Caldwell School. And that my dad hadn’t left. Oh, that’s two. Sorry. The school. Definitely the school.

Character Interview Every Inferno Book Tour

8 Aug

We’re hosting an interview with one of the characters from YA mystery “Every Inferno”. Enjoy the character interview.

With JJ Jones, star of Every Inferno.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Who are you? What is your role in the story?

Hey. I’m JJ. I dunno…I mean, there’s not much to say about me. I’m a sophomore in high school. I live with my aunt, Maggie. I like to party. What else do you need to know? I’m not sure why I have to be here, anyway. Johanna said she wanted me to stop by your blog, but she didn’t say you’d be asking me all kinds of questions.

What is your favorite hobby?

Look, don’t get all “that’s so cute” or anything, but I sort of like to write. That’s pretty much it. Otherwise I mostly just hang out with my friends.

No, I’m not telling you what I write. That’s none of your business.

What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

Probably these dreams I started having lately. I don’t really like talking about them. They’re about Tattoo Guy. The guy who killed my parents.

Then there’s figuring out what’s going on with McKinley. And fighting with Darryl. And Patrick. Yeah. Plenty of challenges.

If you could make one wish, what would it be?

Probably for this interview to be over.

Tell us a secret about you.

No way! You learn enough secrets about me in this book Johanna insisted on writing.

Depressed. Defiant. Possible alcoholic. These are just a few of the terms used to describe fifteen-year-old Jacob Jasper Jones. Lately, though, JJ has a new one to add to the list: detective. He’s been having strange dreams about the fire that killed his parents ten years ago, and he thinks he finally has the clue to catching the arsonist who destroyed his family.

A murder investigation isn’t the only thing the dreams trigger for JJ, though. They also lead to secret meetings with his estranged sister, an unlikely connection with a doctor who lost his daughter in the fire, and a confusing friendship with McKinley, a classmate of JJ’s who seems determined to help him solve the mystery.

All JJ wants is to shake the problems that have followed him since that fire, and he’s convinced he must catch the arsonist to do it. But as JJ struggles to find the culprit, he sees there’s more than one mystery in his life he needs to solve.
