Interview for the book tour for Cameo

26 Sep

cameobanner

Today’s stop is an interview for the book tour for YA thriller / romance novel “Cameo”. I hope you enjoy the interview! I certainly had a blast reading through the author’s responses.

The Interview

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I like to do yoga. Lately I’ve been into nature walks for inspiration. I did one today and came home revved up for Broken part 2 – so crazy. I go back and forth between making music for my soundtracks and writing my drafts. I’m trying to find time to go back to horseback riding. It’s tough in New York City to find a place that’s not an hour plus outside the city. I now need that hour to write.

What is your role in the story?

This is an interesting question. Thank you for posing this. Very clever. I feel like my role in the story is to be the voice of the supporting characters as they interact and live with the main character.

What is your favorite hobby?

Horseback riding. I miss it like crazy.

What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

I think Nia’s main issue is trust and the story almost makes her trust issues worst . I feel like she has to overcome that in order to really solve her dilemma.

If you could make one wish, what would it be?

I would wish that we could live in better harmony with animals so that the endangered animal list could become extinct. We have such a huge impact on the environment with no concern for how other animals in the food chain are effected.

Character Interview Hostile Takeover Book Tour

23 Aug

hostiletakeoverbanner

I’m hosting a character interview for the book tour for mystery / thriller / sci-fi “Hostile Takeover”. I’m interviewing Rafe and Kama from the book. Enjoy the interview!

Character Interview

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Who are you? What is your role in the story?

Rafe: Thanks for inviting me to the interview. I’m Raphael McTavish, new CEO of EcoMech Corp. Call me Rafe. I’ve brought along my—

Kama: —liaison from Oasis Corp, Kamala Bhatia.

Rafe (grinning at Kama): When she isn’t working undercover as a computer tech, or a teacher. We’ve come to Harvest, EcoMech’s colony world and corporate headquarters, to find the man who blackmailed my predecessor and brother-in-law, Leon Goldman.

Kama (leaning in): And he plans to do that by painting a target on his back so the blackmailer will come after him. Moorhk! I’m here to make sure he doesn’t get himself killed.

Rafe (clears throat): I joined Earth Force when I was 16, and left it at 21 to open my own company, Security Partners. Over the past nine years, I’ve grown Security Partners into one of the most successful privately-held businesses in the galaxy.

Kama: Don’t be fooled by his expensive wardrobe and thousand credit haircut. If you think he’s one of those soft corporate bastards, you haven’t seen him take on the goon squad in hand-to-hand combat.

Rafe: It was hard handing over control of Security Partners to my second-in-command to take the job at EcoMech, but I owed Leon’s father, Aaron Goldman, a favor.

Kama: The hard part was returning to Harvest to face his family. They haven’t spoken since the suicide of his wife fourteen years ago. His father is a piece of work.

Rafe (placing a hand on Kama’s arm): Perhaps now isn’t the time…

What is your favorite hobby?

Kama: He’s a workaholic. He doesn’t have time for hobbies.

Rafe: I admit I work hard. I play hard, too—scuba diving, windsurfing, swimming. Then there’s the pickup soccer games, Alpine skiing, tinkering with flyers.

What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

Rafe: To catch a ruthless blackmailer.

Kama: Liar. The real challenge is facing your father, who still thinks of you as a murderer. And not letting those sociopaths on the board twist you into one of them.

Rafe: And getting Kama to open up to me. She sees herself as Robin Hood, hacking corporate computer systems to help the downtrodden. I’d like to know what drives her to take that kind of risk.

If you could make one wish, what would it be?

Rafe (squirming): I’d stop my wife from murdering our children and committing suicide.

Kama: If your father had treated you right, you wouldn’t have married Youko. Married with three kids on the way at 16! That’s insane.

Rafe: I knew Youko had issues. I should have done more…

Tell us a secret about you.

Rafe: After my mother died, I stole my father’s shiny new flyer and wrecked it. I was 14. I’d been partying with other kids out in the canyons. I was depressed and wanted to die. I pulled the anti-collision chip from the flyer and did my best to splatter myself into a cliff face. I would have succeeded except that I in my drunken stupor, I pulled the GPS instead of the anti-collision chip. I still wrecked, but not as spectacularly as I’d planned. My brother-in-law, Ben Nighthorse, figured it out. He made me promise I’d never try suicide again. He and my sister, Shannon, took me in. If not for his guidance, I wouldn’t be here today.

Book Excerpt

Excerpt 3 The great BBGP ride

The tanatocar moved swiftly along the plains of BBGP, manoeuvring through the piles of industrial debris. Welka clung to the steering wheel, the end of her tongue comically stuck out, a sign of concentration. Finch was sitting next to her, navigating, and William was at the rear, looking at the black four-wheel drives slowly closing the gap behind them.

‘Wel, do you have a plan of how we can lose our shadow?’ he asked her calmly.

‘I’m trying to get into the most un-driveable part of BBGP; they’ll get stuck there,’ she said.

‘I think they know what you are up to,’ William said, observing a man with a bazooka popping out through the window of the closest chaser car. ‘They intend to shoot us.’

Welka cursed. ‘Finch, join William at the back and help him to trash them. And hold on to your belts, guys, when I shout “Jump”.’

Finch hopped on the rear platform, and grabbed the control palp of the ‘shitgrip’.

‘William, get the catapult ready, I’ll shitgrip something vile,’ he said.

‘Jump!’

The tanatocar rocketed between three and four meters into the air just past a wall of rubbish. The guys nearly fell off the car.

Welka merrily commented, ‘So, how was the landing, astronauts?’

William ignored it and asked, ‘Which one is the release button on the catapult? This one?’ He pressed the green button with a spoon image on it. The catapult immediately set off the scoop upright and then returned into its horizontal state.

‘Wow,’ William approved.

‘The catapult gets into the ‘ready’ mode automatically after shooting. Here’s your first ammunition,’ Finch handed him an old Persian rag he fished out from a mound they have just passed. ‘There’s kerosene over here, soak it in…’

That moment the chasing party finally shot at them and the pile of garbage exploded two meters away from the tanatocar.

‘Damn that bastard!’ Welka giggled. ‘What a dirty animal that Sloth! We’re lucky he’s cock-eyed.’

‘Welka, watch the road,’ Finch shouted.

‘What road?’ she replied, laughing.

Character Interview The Unholy Book Tour

25 Mar

bannertheunholy

I’m hosting a post today about supernatural thriller “The Unholy”. In the post, the author talks about his main character.

Lessons I learned from my hero (heroine/villain).

Claire Sanchez, 25 year old medicine woman, curandera, is a young woman who has lost her mother when she was five years old, witnessed her murder at the hands of a black robed man. She is a woman of tremendous courage and resolve. Fear tries to get her by the throat and squeeze the life out of her. There are so many times that she fought not to give up, to surrender to despair. I find her so human here, the draw to give up and make oneself disappear when confronted with evil. Evil, the real thing, can be so overwhelming, big and mysterious, and appear to be way out of our influence or control. She is one person, a very young and inexperienced person at that, up against a veritable force not only of society but of nature gone bad. To feel the odds stacked against you and yet know that you can’t be true to yourself, to your life, and to go on with life without getting answers and doing what you need to do to find those answers, no matter what, is sheer inspiration. Courage is courage only when it is face to face with one bad ass enemy…Archbishop William Anarch! If she dies then she knows that she has done what she has needed to do. Death is a real possibility for her. She knows this and yet has to risk it in order to be true to herself as a woman. To risk everything, life itself, in order to be true to self…that is courage and this is a lesson to be learned.

Author Interview with Danae Samson for Burn Book Tour

28 Jan

prbannerburn

We’re hosting an interview with Danae Samson, author of horror / thriller novel “Burn”. Enjoy!

1)          First, tell us about yourself – where you live, your family, and those sorts of details.

I was raised in southern California and have spent most of my life there.  I have also lived in Portland, Oregon and Boston, Massachusetts, both of which have had an impact on my writing.  I have taught English for close to eight years and currently work with students prepping for the SATs.  Teaching has given me the opportunity to apply my love of writing to a very practical need: education.

2)      How long have you been writing?

I have been writing, creatively, since I was eleven.  I have written poems, songs, short stories, and academic essays, but horror fiction has always been my favorite.

3)          Do you have a favorite place to write?

No, and I should.  I am currently struggling with this conundrum and it has directly affected my productivity as a writer.  The need to write is so strong that I try to be flexible, but having a designated place or way to write, I think, is crucial.

4)          Why did you decide to write Burn?

I attended a faculty meeting about what to do in the event of an active shooter on campus.  I left the meeting unsettled, angry, and scared.  I went home, put down my bags, grabbed my laptop, and wrote the first four pages of Burn in 20 minutes. It was evident to me then that I wanted to discuss, analyze, and address my feelings about this new plague facing schools.  Burn is that process.

5)          Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

I am completely biased because my favorite character in the book is John Lewis, whom I modeled after myself.  He was my opportunity to be represented in a story that, I felt, was reflective of my own life, concerns, and feelings.  John helped put those feelings out there and examine them (and myself) in a way I had never done before.  It was a very cathartic experience.

6)          How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

Simon was a complete nightmare to write.  I had to constantly revise his dialogue to be consistent with that of a sociopath and the research for his character was endless, not to mention unsettling.  He was the epitome of everything that scares me as an educator and to face him every day and write for him was an immense challenge.

7)          Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

I always do two rounds of editing after I finish a manuscript.  The first is grammatical.  I go through and fix the odds and ends that I missed during the flow of construction.  The second revision is for content.  Does the story work?  Are there any questions left unanswered?  Did I cut any corners or leave anything out?  At the completion of these two efforts, I feel the book is ready for submission.

8)   Tell us what you’re working on at the moment.

I am dabbling in a bit of historical fiction and tweaking it to stream into a horror story.  I love incorporating historical facts into a fictitious plot.  It is great fun to see real life dancing with fantasy characters in a world that is part true and part play.

Book Excerpt

Her rapid movements suddenly halted.  John wanted to run, wanted to be at the truck’s tailgate so that he would know what Kate knew and the shock would be over.  But his body resisted, a natural intuition trying to protect him from whatever the bag covered.  Ages floated passed until he was at the Ram’s edge.  His eyes started at Kate’s face, moved down to her arms, hands and then to the tips of her fingers that held the torn corners of the black plastic.  He considered stopping them there, turning his back on the possible horror that would haunt him and feed his nightmares, but they persisted.

Author Interview The Goddess and The Great Beast Tour

23 Dec

bannergoddess

We’re hosting an interview today for the tour for “The Goddess and The Great Beast”. We’re interviewing the author, Adrian Gross.

The Interview

Who is your favorite character from your book, The Goddess and The Great Beast, and why?

I have to say my favourite character is Aleister Crowley. An almost universally reviled and mostly misunderstood upper-class late Victorian occultist is just such a fun character to write and there’s enough biographical information, as well as superbly mad photographic evidence, to be able to flesh out his wild over-the-top personality.

Why did you choose the supernatural thriller genre for your book?

In a way I didn’t choose it. It just happened. That simply turned out to be the type of book that came out. I didn’t make a conscious decision to write in a specific genre. I understand, especially from a business perspective, why people do make that choice, but it does seem somewhat artistically bankrupt. One should really be writing what needs to be written; what interests the writer and contributes, however minutely, to the greater sum of human culture, not what you think you can sell. I do appreciate, however, that this artistic high ground is highly likely to stop suddenly at an abrupt cliff-edge beneath which lies the boggy waste of insolvency.

What did you struggle with the most while writing?

Maintaining my enthusiasm is always tricky as it tends to ebb and flow on a daily basis. One day I’m on fire, words tumbling on to the page almost faster than I can keep up: the next, what I’ve written seems dreary and amateurish and all my ideas are lame. One has to learn to accept the roller-coaster of creative emotions and put the good days to good use and on the bad ones, do something else instead.

Is the protagonist of your story based on someone you know?

He was inspired by my father, who was in the Army in the Middle East during the war, and inevitably there is something of myself in him, but he has traits of his own, too. Most characters tend to grow into themselves over time because even if they are based on someone else, they are usually developing in (fictional) circumstances unique to themselves.

Name your favorite book in the same genre as your book.

I’m not sure I can. I’m not really a genre fan, as such. However, in a similar sort of vein is Denis Wheatley’s ‘The Devil Rides Out’; a gloriously campy pulp novel of devil-worshipping English aristocrats between the wars. Hammer made an equally ridiculous film of it in the ‘60’s with Christopher Lee.

What are you up to at the moment?

I’ve got a couple of ideas bubbling up. One is a twisted Heavy Metal murder mystery which I feel deserves a great deal of hands-on research to get it going. The other concerns an aristocratic anarchist serial-killer. I don’t think either are likely to be troubling the Booker Prize jury, but they both seem like fun to me!

Book Excerpt from The Goddess and The Great Beast

20 Nov

bannergoddess

We’re hosting a snippet today from “The Goddess and The Great Beast”, a supernatural thriller by author Adrian Gross.

Book Excerpt

So, as a million stars twinkled feverishly through the hazy, drowsy air, I laboured along the alleys of old Baghdad in search of Babylon. I followed Farouk through the dark and disorienting maze, a crate of whiskey in my arms and a fluttering of excitement in my chest. Crumbling mud-brick hovels, decaying under the constant grinding erosion of the desert winds that swept in from the north, rubbed shoulders with rusting corrugated iron shacks that were slowly being eaten away by the waves of salty air that drifted over from the Bahr al-Milh, the Lake of Salt, to the south-west. Every now and then a modern concrete hotel in the now slightly passé, and slightly tatty, Art Deco style stood incongruously amid the rows of impoverished shops and dwellings and ruins. The streets were haphazardly lit, but busy with a tumbling mass of people and animals who all seemed to be watching me with glazed, empty stares. I felt as if I was under constant surveillance, although my observers had no interest whatsoever in what I was doing. I tried to ignore my paranoia and not lose sight of Farouk.

Baghdad itself was an Arab development, an eighth century new-town, but, like most major cities, it had hosted an ever-shifting population of many different peoples and their many forms of belief over the years. According to Farouk what remained included a very small oasis of the old Babylonian religion which had been here before Baghdad. I didn’t know whether to believe him. It all sounded a bit far-fetched. Well, a lot far-fetched, but he seemed as genuine about this as he was whenever a shipment of any sort of contraband was involved, and I was desperate for some excitement, so I suspended my disbelief and kept following him.

Babylon itself, of course, had long since faded into uncertain memory, a misunderstood myth amid impenetrable desert ruins. However, as there had been Jews in the Babylonian world and there were still Jews in the modern world, despite Adolf’s best efforts, I was hopeful that maybe Farouk’s Babylonian sect had been equally tenacious, or bloody-minded, and preserved their unrestrained pagan rituals down the millennia for my enlightenment. At the very least I hoped a night of heathen entertainment would relieve my stifling ennui.

My heart was now thumping in anticipation of the possibility that I just might be about to witness a living relic of ancient Babylonia. There was also the effort of carrying a case of bottles of whiskey through the steamy, humid night. Farouk had graciously offered for his boy to carry the burden, but I wasn’t sure I trusted him either to manage the heavy and awkward box, or to not just run off with it and devour the entire contents in some abandoned wadi on the edge of town.

Book Excerpt

It was late afternoon when Abraham decided to allow himself the indulgence of half an hour in the treasury. It was a secret room concealed behind a panel in his office wall. Only a few trusted followers knew of its existence. The room’s contents were too precious to become common knowledge.

He typed a code into the keypad next to the steel door. It swung open on noiseless hinges and then shut behind him. The design of the interior resembled a bank safe. A windowless space with rows of small metal doors lining the walls. Individual security keypads were mounted on each one. A fluorescent fixture glared down from the ceiling on a bare table standing in the center of the room.

Abraham walked up to one of the small metal doors and typed a code into its keypad. When the door swung open, he withdrew the most recent addition to his collection. Metcalf was holding in his hands the helmet of the Emperor Constantine. He felt sure that the emperor’s success as a military commander was due in large part to the sacred objects he carried with him into war.

Abraham set the helmet down in the center of the table and regarded the prizes of his collection with satisfaction. A shield, a lance, and a helmet. All of them had brought triumph in battle to their possessors. Taken together, they should prove to be invincible. The French had a name for such relics. They called them objets de puissance. Objects of power.

Metcalf looked up from the items on the table and surveyed the silent, locked compartments that lined the walls. He had spent a lifetime acquiring their contents. Each artifact carried the sanction of God. Metcalf would need all their powers if the prophecy was to be fulfilled.

It was not his lot to wait patiently for the day when the Fallen would be banished to hell. He was to bring the heavenly kingdom to earth by whatever means necessary. That was what the Lord’s sacred warriors had always done.

The day was coming soon when the Blessed Nephilim would redeem the world from the Fallen who now overran it. Men had forgotten how to fear the Lord. It would be Abraham’s destiny to remind them. Metcalf carefully returned his treasures to their compartments. “In hoc signo vinces,” he whispered, shutting the safe door behind him.

THE ARKANA SERIES: Archaeological Thrillers That Defy History
Volume One – The Granite Key

“Think ‘MEDIUM meets THE LOST SYMBOL’ and it only begins to describe the pleasures of THE GRANITE KEY – 5 Stars.” (Kindle Nation)

A Wake-Up Call
In a nightmare, nineteen year old Cassie Forsythe sees her sister attacked by a man in a cowboy hat who demands something called “the key.” Her nightmare mutates into reality before the night is over. Cassie is called to identify her sister’s body–murdered exactly as her dream foretold. Cassie dismisses her vision as a fluke and fights to get on with her life. Disconnected and aimless now that her only family is gone, she drifts until the evening when she catches the man in the cowboy hat ransacking her sister’s apartment. He bolts with an odd-looking stone cylinder–the granite key. From that moment, Cassie’s normal world evaporates.

A Secret Society
She learns that her sister led a double life–retrieving artifacts for a secret organization called the Arkana. The Arkana’s leader, an elder named Faye, explains that her group performs a controversial kind of archaeology. They scour the globe for evidence of ancient pre-patriarchal civilizations in hopes of salvaging the lost history of the world. Their network of troves safeguards artifacts from highly sophisticated goddess-worshipping cultures on every continent. Cassie’s sister had the psychic ability to touch an artifact and relive its past. Cassie has now inherited this gift. Faye wants the girl to take over her sister’s role in the organization. Cassie doubts her powers but agrees. Now an insider, she is transported to the Arkana’s mysterious underground vault in the countryside outside Chicago where the group tackles the mystery of her sister’s murder.

A Dangerous Cult
The Arkana learns that the man in the cowboy hat is a hired mercenary named Leroy Hunt and that he is working for a fundamentalist religious cult known as the Blessed Nephilim. He takes his orders directly from the cult’s domineering prophet–Abraham Metcalf. The granite key which Leroy stole is inscribed with hieroglyphics revealing the location of a mythological artifact reputed to have mystical powers–the Sage Stone. Although skeptical of its legendary capabilities, the Arkana is still afraid to allow the relic to fall into the cult’s hands. Abraham’s fanatical belief in the power of the Sage Stone could be the catalyst to start a war of religious genocide.

Unlocking The Key
Before she died, Cassie’s sister took photos of the strange markings on the granite key. The Arkana decodes the hieroglyphics which point to the ancient ruins of Minoan Crete as the hiding place of the Sage Stone. Faye hastily assembles a retrieval team including Cassie, her newly-appointed bodyguard Erik, and a British researcher named Griffin. The band of treasure hunters is mismatched and wildly dysfunctional from the start. Griffin has never gone on a field mission, Erik treats his inexperienced colleagues with contempt, and Cassie second-guesses her psychic hunches. She battles to prove herself to Erik at every turn. Their internal clashes rival the bigger crisis of what to do when they come face to face with their enemies.

A Matter Of Life Or Death
Even as they rake through megalithic tombs and Minoan palaces for clues, Abraham dispatches his son Daniel and hired gun Leroy Hunt to recover the Sage Stone. The Nephilim operatives won’t hesitate to kill anyone standing in their way. Will Cassie and her teammates avert global disaster or find themselves casualties of Abraham’s mania to exterminate the world of unbelievers? The Granite Key holds the answer.
