Character Interview for The Duchess Quest

2 Dec

duchessquestbanner

Today I’m hosting a character interview for the book tour for “The Duchess Quest”, a fantasy / romance novel. I’m interviewing Jon Cosmith, one of the characters in the book.

Character Interview

Character: Jon Cosmith
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
For starters, dear, you can call me Jon – all my friends do. And I’m certain you’ll wish to become quite friendly with me before your little interrogations are through. Ha… I digress. I may or may not be a Jordinian fugitive who abandoned my government… but who’s keeping track, anyway? More importantly, I’m surely the cleverest and best-looking suitor our young Duchess shall have the fortune of encountering along her journey.
What is your role in the story?

Ah, story. Aye, it’s recently been brought to my attention that, of all tales in which to be featured, mine is called The Duchess Quest. Truly? Could the author not have bestowed a more masculine-sounding title for the likes of me? Alas… To answer your question, pet, as I’ve no doubt you’re intensely curious about me, my role is to pursue the lovely Duchess Eludaine (among the other insufferable imbeciles competing for her hand), and secure the gold – er, I mean, the darling girl – for my very own.
What is your favorite hobby?

I’d not call them hobbies so much as skills, my dear. For example, you may not realize exactly how much practice is involved to perfect the art of taking things undetected. That’s stealing, you challenge me? Well then, answer me this: is taking from an utter fool, who neither notices nor deserves what’s missing, really stealing?
What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

Ha! I daresay, my little interrogator, but you amuse me to no end. To put it bluntly, darling, nothing challenges me. I am the challenge.
If you could make one wish, what would it be?

Oh, I need not wish for anything, my sweet. Whatever I desire, believe me, I obtain. Anything is possible. It’s only a matter of time and strategy.

Book Excerpt from The Leopard Stratagem

I hosted an excerpt from historical fantasy “The Leopard Vanguard” a few days ago, and now I’m back with an excerpt from the sequel, “The Leopard Stratagem”. Enjoy!

Book Excerpt

One/Unus

A fierce gust of wind stung Tullus’ face while Celestra fought to keep up with him.

The cold had announced itself hours ago, imposing its arrival like an unwanted guest on the  two dauntless travelers. Tullus’ Leopard-print breeches had frozen to his legs and he wondered how much more of this cold he could endure.

Thin, powder-white mist surrounded Tullus and Celestra. Around them a frozen wasteland devoid of life. Celestra growled her disdain: no doubt the Leopardess hadn’t encountered weather this cold during her lifetime.

“I think we’re lost, Girl,” Tullus said. He pulled Vulcan’s map from his backpack and eyed it confusedly. Tullus squinted at the map’s handwriting, but could make nothing from it. The frozen haze made the map almost illegible. He summoned the Lucis spell and glanced at the map under the illumination of the yellow Lucis orb. After reading it for a few moments, he looked up and cursed; Celestra had disappeared. Now he could add her absence to his list of grievances.

He called out to the Incantra but she did not respond. Tullus drew his cloak tighter across his chest. His boots were stiff and his feet were so cold he could barely move his toes, while his body felt like a stiff slab of meat that had been left out in the cold overnight. Celestra appeared in front of him, her spotted coat emerging from beneath the invisibility cloak of the Furtim spell. She growled.

“What is it, Girl?”

Celestra pointed her right front paw towards a dim outline of a cylindrical object in the distance. Tullus cast the Oculus spell and noticed it was a tower of some sort. It looked old, but still intact. He smiled for the first time in days–finally, a stroke of good luck had come their way. “Lead on, Girl.”

They trudged on towards the tower as the fierce wind fought to claim them in its frozen grip.

As the tower grew closer, Tullus eyed its oblong shape that twisted upwards toward the glacial sky, its exterior webbed in ice. They found a wooden door crusted in ice. Tullus tried opening the door but it was frozen. He summoned what Vigor he had left and threw his shoulder into it. After two attempts, and with Celestra’s added might, the door slammed open.

Inside was dark. Tullus again cast the Lucis spell, and the glowing orb reappeared above his head, offering much needed light in addition to warmth. Tullus pulled the door back in and the howling winds deceased. It was still chilly inside; but for now they were safe from frozen death.

A stone staircase spiraled upwards to a second level. Tullus and Celestra followed it. It ended in a stone landing which opened up into a large, shuttered, stone room containing a long, dusty table surrounded by wooden chairs. Tullus removed his backpack and slumped down in one of the chairs. Despite its careworn condition it supported his weight.

Tullus surveyed the room. A pantry stood against one of the walls; next to it was an alcove where an old wooden sign was posted. The following words inscribed on it in gold Latin print:

Outpost III: Home of the 14th Air Wing known as The Star falcons

Commanded by Metux the Younger

Needing time to collect himself and continue developing his magical abilities, Tullus decides to seek out the wisdom of a reclusive wizard named Hradack, also known as the Leopard Master and a product of the Age of Paladins.

Author Interview Shawndirea Tour

11 Nov

shawndireabanner

Today I’m interviewing Leonard D. Hilley II, author of fantasy novel “Shawndirea”. Enjoy the interview!

1.) First, tell us about yourself- where you live, your family and those sorts of details.

I have always loved biology and writing. I have a B.S. in biology and my MFA in creative writing. This probably explains why a lot of my novels cross between science and fantasy. My love for biology, however, is what keeps me digging deeper and asking, “What if?”

I currently live in the mountains of Kentucky with my wife and children. I love being surrounded by nature, and there are wondrous areas to hike and explore here. The serenity is priceless.

2.) When did you start writing?

I started writing at a young age. I wrote my first novel when I was 11 years old. I have always loved books, so it’s never been a surprise to me that I would write my own novels.

3.)Do you have a favorite place to write?

A lot of where I write depends upon my schedule. I teach general education courses at a local business college, so I squeeze in time to write at my office, the library, or my home office. Sometimes my best writing has occurred during these times, and I’m thankful for laptops.

4.)Why did you decide to write Shawndirea?

Shawndirea was originally set to be a novella as a backstory for Devils Den. However, the characters took over and an epic novel evolved with two more novels to follow. The fantasy world of Aetheaon is so vivid and filled with strange mystical characters that a dozen or more novels could spawn from this realm.

5.)Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone else to do that for you?

I generally proofread each page a dozen or more times. I have several great beta readers (two that are remarkable editors), and their feedback is priceless.

6.)Tell us what you’re working on at the moment.

I’m halfway finished with the book that follows Shawndirea. I’m also working on a science fiction thriller that is a stand alone novel from my Darkness Series.

About Shawndirea

Often the smallest unexpected surprises garner the most demanding dilemmas, which proves to be the ordeal that entomologist Ben Whytten faces. While netting butterflies to add to his vast collection, he mistakenly sweeps what he thinks is the most spectacular butterfly he has ever seen into his net. Upon examining his catch, Ben is horrified to discover he has captured a faery and shredded her delicate wings into useless ribbons.

Devastated, Ben vows to take Shawndirea back to her realm, Aetheaon; but he discovers that doing so places their lives into immediate danger. To get to Aetheaon, they must pass through a portal rift deep inside the haunted cavern, Devils Den.

Once they cross the rift, Ben enters a world where mysteries, magic, betrayal, and power struggles await. He must adapt quickly or die because Aetheaon is filled with enchanted creatures and numerous races where chaos often dominates order. And since Shawndirea’s destined for the throne of Elvendale, opposing dark forces plot to prevent her from ever reaching her kingdom again. The faery’s magic isn’t enough to fully protect them, so he must trust other adventurers to aid them during their journey.

I’m hosting an excerpt today from historical fantasy novel “The Leopard Vanguard”. In a few days, I’ll be hosting an excerpt from its sequel, so if you liked this excerpt, stay tuned for the next one!

Book Excerpt

Prologue: The Opportune Battle

{March 12th, 36 AD}

“Ad augusta per angusta.”

“To high places by narrow roads.” –Latin expression

One/Unus

At the edge of the world’s greatest Empire, two armies gathered on a battlefield.

Tullus Acilius Ulixes, Prime officer of the First Cohort, and senior Centurion of the 3rd Legion, watched the opposing army of Parthians gathering in the distance. Here he was, surveying another battleground: this one a grassland, dotted with short clover patches stretched out over an expanse, soft earth under his feet. Men would die here today. “ I hear the Parthians are quite an effective fighting force,” Tullus said. His friend and Optio, Decimus Axius, was preparing to leave for the final inspection. Around them men were preparing the siege engines for battle.

“I hope this young Prince our leaders are backing is worth the blood and sweat of five thousand Roman soldiers,” Decimus said.

“Vitellius knows what he’s doing, Decimus. Besides, Emperor Tiberius wants the incumbent Artabanus II off the Parthian throne. He says this new figurehead Prince, Tridates, will bring stability along our eastern borders.”

“Sometimes you sound more like a bloody politician than a Roman officer, Tullus,” Decimus said. He trudged off to inspect the ranks.

Tullus grinned. He certainly didn’t feel like a politician: dressed in his steel helm with transverse red plume crest, ring mail shirt under a leather harness decorated with gold phalerae. Leather pteruges extended beneath his harness while a blue cloak and greaves completed his uniform. Tullus turned to admire the first line of his troops: dressed in their strip armor, iron helms and armed with shields and spears. Despite the tedious four day march from their base in Syria they were ready for battle–that’s what it meant to march under the Eagles of Rome.                            The pale blue heavens stretched out above him, filled with soft clouds outlining the yellow sun. His attention centered on a jagged cloud resembling a Griffin’s head as it announced its regal presence across the sky. He had seen a drawing of a Combat Griffin once, in a cave, when he was a boy, its image forever etched in his memory. The majestic creatures had disappeared years ago, while their legendary riders, the Air Paladins, had faded into history. Tullus sighed and turned his attention back to his surroundings. The sun beat down on him mercilessly, warm for March, and it would get warmer once the battle commenced–the close proximity of men killing one another did that.

“Something on your mind, Tullus?” Decimus was back from his inspection.

Tullus eyed the jagged cloud again. “What I wouldn’t do for an Air Legion of Combat Griffins above us.”

“And who would ride them my friend?”

“Well it wouldn’t be me, Decimus. You know I don’t like heights.”

The Leopard Vanguard

Character Interview Cursed Heroes: The Beginnings Blog Tour

8 Nov

cursedheroesbanner

I’m hosting a character interview today for the tour for science-fiction / fantasy “Cursed Heroes: The Beginnings”. I hope you enjoy the character interview, and welocme to Carlton Joan, one of the characters of this book.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Who are you? What is your role in the story?

My name is Carlton Joan, and I am the man that destroyed the world. I once was a brilliant scientist and inventor. I used my knowledge to help all of human kind for a time. That is until I wanted power and did anything to get it. But now I serve one role in life and that is to clean up after mankind’s mistakes for the rest of time, or atleast until they leave earth.

What is your favorite hobby?

Hobbies well that’s a hard one see that I have a lot of time on my hands. Let’s see I’ve done almost everything that one could possibly call a hobby but out of them all I would say I like collecting things, animals mostly. In fact, I have one of the biggest, well zoos in the universe consisting of almost 20 million different animals. Most from earths different time periods and some from other planets that my sons live on.

What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

Well I would have to say my lust for power would have to be my biggest challenge to get over. Having to give it up and find a way to save everyone while not getting credit for it just killed me inside at first. But I managed to find a way to get over it and learn to do what I had to.

If you could make one wish, what would it be?

If I had a wish to get anything I wanted, I would wish for a daughter.

Tell us a secret about you.
My secret that no one else knows, hmm well there are a lot but I guess the one anyone can picture is the Ice age, yep that was kind of my fault. I was experimenting with a new plant and it back fired on me. The planet grew faster than I thought and produced so much oxygen so fast that before I could get it under control it had grown into a forest covering seventy percent of the planets land mass. Then one stray lighting bloat close to the center of the forest triggered a massive explosion, which in turn set the whole forest on fire. And being fueled by so much oxygen the forest burned to the ground within hours fill the air around the whole planet with smoke and ash. Which blocked out the sun for a few days and the rest well its history.

Character Interview One Wish Book Tour

20 Oct

onewishbanner

Character interview time! And my goodness, today I’m interviewing Till Nesbitt, and she has a thing with fairy godmothers and with books; I love books, so I liked her right away! I hope you like her too.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Who are you? What is your role in the story?

A: My name is Till Nesbitt, and I’m the main female character in both books included in ONE WISH: The OF STARDUST Collection.

I’m 26 years old but my life is…not quite my own. I still live with my parents, and I work in the family bookstore, which has pretty much become my life. I read a lot and I dream of a time when things could be different… but to tell you the truth, I don’t know if they’ll ever really change…

What is your favorite hobby?

Definitely reading. I am not nor have I ever been athletically inclined. Last picked for every team in school except the one for the reading marathon we had one year. So…yeah. Books. Work with them, live with them, live in them, really.

What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

Well, I’ve just seen my Great Aunt Tilda for the first time since I was a small child…and I think the old girl isn’t quite right, if you know what I mean. She is talking about all these fantastical ideas and changes that are going to be happening to me, to my life. I’m not sure I can believe her, and what’s more I’m not sure that, even if there is something to all this stuff she’s telling me, that I’m up to the challenge. I think I want to try…I just hope that my best is enough!

If you could make one wish, what would it be?

Actually…I can’t really tell you. There are, um, rules, and if I talk about my wishes, well, I’m sorry but I just can’t. I would if I could, but when you only get One Wish and you’re not supposed to talk about it, if you want it to work then you’d better not talk about it!

Tell us a secret about you.

Somehow, deep down inside, just the smallest part of me at first and now more and more as I listen to Aunt Tilda, what she is telling me makes sense. I always thought that I might be different, somehow…and maybe, this really is how. Maybe I’m finally going to become what I was always meant to be…I guess only time will tell.
