Character Interview for The Duchess Quest

2 Dec

duchessquestbanner

Today I’m hosting a character interview for the book tour for “The Duchess Quest”, a fantasy / romance novel. I’m interviewing Jon Cosmith, one of the characters in the book.

Character Interview

Character: Jon Cosmith
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
For starters, dear, you can call me Jon – all my friends do. And I’m certain you’ll wish to become quite friendly with me before your little interrogations are through. Ha… I digress. I may or may not be a Jordinian fugitive who abandoned my government… but who’s keeping track, anyway? More importantly, I’m surely the cleverest and best-looking suitor our young Duchess shall have the fortune of encountering along her journey.
What is your role in the story?

Ah, story. Aye, it’s recently been brought to my attention that, of all tales in which to be featured, mine is called The Duchess Quest. Truly? Could the author not have bestowed a more masculine-sounding title for the likes of me? Alas… To answer your question, pet, as I’ve no doubt you’re intensely curious about me, my role is to pursue the lovely Duchess Eludaine (among the other insufferable imbeciles competing for her hand), and secure the gold – er, I mean, the darling girl – for my very own.
What is your favorite hobby?

I’d not call them hobbies so much as skills, my dear. For example, you may not realize exactly how much practice is involved to perfect the art of taking things undetected. That’s stealing, you challenge me? Well then, answer me this: is taking from an utter fool, who neither notices nor deserves what’s missing, really stealing?
What is the challenge you’re trying to overcome during the story?

Ha! I daresay, my little interrogator, but you amuse me to no end. To put it bluntly, darling, nothing challenges me. I am the challenge.
If you could make one wish, what would it be?

Oh, I need not wish for anything, my sweet. Whatever I desire, believe me, I obtain. Anything is possible. It’s only a matter of time and strategy.

About the Authors

DonnaBrownDonna:  Donna is a longtime book lover and sometime book reviewer and has devoured books from an early age. She writes short (or long) stories as and when inspiration hits and is married to fantasy author David M. Brown (Fezariu’s Epiphany, A World Apart). She was also co-contributor to David’s book, Man vs Cat, a humorous look at life with six rambunctious rescue cats.

Donna has lived in many different areas of the UK over the last 30-something years but has remained in Yorkshire for the past decade. She ardently disputes the misnomer that ‘It’s grim up north’. DavidBrownDavid:  David Brown could be considered a fantasy fanatic, especially since he has spent the last 10 years developing a 47,000-year history for his fictional world of Elenchera. When converting his obsession into literary form, David commits himself to a rigorous writing and editing process before his work can meet his approval. Combined with the critical eye of his wife and a BA Hons in History and English, David’s dedication leads him to his goal of inspiring readers through heartfelt stories and characters.

Although David is inspired primarily by fantasy fiction, he also finds his muse in the form of anime, world cinema, history, and biographies. His own books, Fezariu’s Epiphany and A World Apart, combine aspects from worlds both old and new into compelling tales of a world not soon forgotten., David himself certainly does not lack a spirit of adventure; in fact, he left his job in 2007 in order to spend a month travelling. Second only to meeting and marrying his wife, David counts this as one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

Book Excerpt from Cross Roads

19 Nov

Today no interview, but a snippet instead! This time from a YA urban fantasy / action adventure book called “Cross Roads”. Enjoy!!

Book Excerpt

The next morning, Decker sat in his black sedan hidden by its tinted windows. The information he had received from the tablet led him to the Garden Way Hotel. The hotel was new in the city on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Decker held a camera in his hands like a photojournalist on assignment. He had taken pictures of everyone who had entered the hotel but only construction workers had entered.

Decker had been in place across from the hotel since dawn. Earlier that morning he had managed to place security cameras near the other entrances that fed directly into his computer. His laptop sat next to him in the passenger seat. Decker had views of the docking and loading area as well as the other entrances of the hotel. It was past eleven o’clock when Decker finally saw activity that interested him. A silver sedan pulled up in from of the hotel. The driver hurried out and opened the rear passenger door. The man who emerged from the backseat was tall, thin and had blonde hair that had been neatly combed back. He wore an expensive suit and a gray long coat. He looked to be in his late thirties and wore dark shades. Decker immediately recognized him and lowered the camera away from his face. His mouth gaped slightly.

“Linus.” he said aloud to himself as if to confirm what his eyes had just witnessed. He quickly raised the camera and rapidly took pictures. The driver led Linus inside. Decker made sure to get a picture of the car and

the plates as well. Decker was certain that whatever was going to happen would take place in this hotel and soon. He quickly turned his attention to his laptop and saw guards taking position at the entrances and securing the perimeter of the hotel.

Decker reached into his pocket and retrieved his cellphone. He hit a speed dial number and the phone picked up on the second ring. No one spoke on the other end. They didn’t have to.

“Confirmed. It’s Linus alright. The Garden Way Hotel.”

“Roger that. Over and out.” replied the deep male voice on the opposite end.

Decker disconnected the call. Now, like a predator hunting its prey, Decker would play the waiting game with his target until it was time to strike.

Today I’m hosting an interview for the tour for MG paranormal adventure “Kristin’s Ghost” by Wayne A.D. Kerr. Welcome to the author, and thanks for taking the time to reply to my questions.

1.) First, tell us about yourself- where you live, your family and those sorts of details.

I was born in Canada, the oldest of six children.  I married my high school sweetheart, Marlene, and we have one daughter, Jackie.  Our family moved to Minneapolis eighteen years ago.  Then twelve years later my wife and I moved to Green Valley, Arizona where we still reside.

2.) When did you start writing?

I wrote scripts for local and regional commercials, as well as, spec screen plays when I was in my twenties.  Then I began writing again twenty five years later.  I’ve been writing seriously for two and half years.

3.)Do you have a favorite place to write?

I get up very early and settle into my favorite easy chair with my laptop.  I write for three to four hours and then have some breakfast, before going for a run, a bike ride or to play tennis.

4.)Why did you decide to write the X+Y Files, in particular Kristin’s Ghost?

I was inspired to write a science fiction/paranormal style series for kids by my nephews.  Everyone likes a ghost story.

5.)Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone else to do that for you?

I make a lot of mistakes while writing, so I do a preliminary proof of everything before I send it to an editor.  My wife and brother also check my work.

6.)Tell us what you’re working on at the moment.

I’m currently working on an adult novel, and planning the next ‘X + Y Files’ adventure.

Author Interview Shawndirea Tour

11 Nov

shawndireabanner

Today I’m interviewing Leonard D. Hilley II, author of fantasy novel “Shawndirea”. Enjoy the interview!

1.) First, tell us about yourself- where you live, your family and those sorts of details.

I have always loved biology and writing. I have a B.S. in biology and my MFA in creative writing. This probably explains why a lot of my novels cross between science and fantasy. My love for biology, however, is what keeps me digging deeper and asking, “What if?”

I currently live in the mountains of Kentucky with my wife and children. I love being surrounded by nature, and there are wondrous areas to hike and explore here. The serenity is priceless.

2.) When did you start writing?

I started writing at a young age. I wrote my first novel when I was 11 years old. I have always loved books, so it’s never been a surprise to me that I would write my own novels.

3.)Do you have a favorite place to write?

A lot of where I write depends upon my schedule. I teach general education courses at a local business college, so I squeeze in time to write at my office, the library, or my home office. Sometimes my best writing has occurred during these times, and I’m thankful for laptops.

4.)Why did you decide to write Shawndirea?

Shawndirea was originally set to be a novella as a backstory for Devils Den. However, the characters took over and an epic novel evolved with two more novels to follow. The fantasy world of Aetheaon is so vivid and filled with strange mystical characters that a dozen or more novels could spawn from this realm.

5.)Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone else to do that for you?

I generally proofread each page a dozen or more times. I have several great beta readers (two that are remarkable editors), and their feedback is priceless.

6.)Tell us what you’re working on at the moment.

I’m halfway finished with the book that follows Shawndirea. I’m also working on a science fiction thriller that is a stand alone novel from my Darkness Series.

About Shawndirea

Shawndirea PB2Title: Shawndirea

Author: Leonard D. Hilley II

Genre: Fantasy

Often the smallest unexpected surprises garner the most demanding dilemmas, which proves to be the ordeal that entomologist Ben Whytten faces. While netting butterflies to add to his vast collection, he mistakenly sweeps what he thinks is the most spectacular butterfly he has ever seen into his net. Upon examining his catch, Ben is horrified to discover he has captured a faery and shredded her delicate wings into useless ribbons.

Devastated, Ben vows to take Shawndirea back to her realm, Aetheaon; but he discovers that doing so places their lives into immediate danger. To get to Aetheaon, they must pass through a portal rift deep inside the haunted cavern, Devils Den.

Once they cross the rift, Ben enters a world where mysteries, magic, betrayal, and power struggles await. He must adapt quickly or die because Aetheaon is filled with enchanted creatures and numerous races where chaos often dominates order. And since Shawndirea’s destined for the throne of Elvendale, opposing dark forces plot to prevent her from ever reaching her kingdom again. The faery’s magic isn’t enough to fully protect them, so he must trust other adventurers to aid them during their journey.

Book Excerpt from The Vineyard

Today I’m hosting a snippet from a literary fiction novel, “The Vineyard”. I hope you enjoy the snippet.

Book Excerpt

CHAPTER 3:

Trafalgar Wallace the Third, referred to by friend and foe alike as “Tripp,” was not widely regarded as a good man or a bad man, as most people measure character. He was known as a practical man, which is a very different thing. He came from a long line of practical men who knew two things well enough that they didn’t need or care to know much else: the proper way to invest the family’s money and the proper way to spend it—or not spend it, preferably, while enjoying the things money could buy before grudgingly passing the remainder on to the next ungrateful generation. By this self-defeating credo, as the Wallace family tree spread and swelled in size across the centuries, the multiplying heirs were required to spend less of the family’s money than those who came before them. This demanded a temperament they all distinctly lacked. As the latest Wallace heir, Tripp was doing on the ocean that day what he did best: squandering what was left of his inheritance.

About The Vineyard

?????????????????????????????????????????????Title: The Vineyard

Author: Michael Hurley

Genre: Literary Fiction

From Michael Hurley, winner of the Somerset Prize for his debut novel, THE PRODIGAL, comes a complex and ambitious, allegorical tale of old money, young passion and ancient mystery in a classic New England seaside village.

Ten years after their college days together, three wounded and very different women reunite for a summer on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. As they come to grips with the challenges and crises in their lives, their encounter with a reclusive poacher known only as “the fisherman” threatens to change everything they believe about their world–and each other.

“Hurley writes beautifully,” says Kirkus Reviews, “especially when describing island and nautical life.” Publishers Weekly praises “his well-crafted prose.”

Author Bio

???????????????????????????????Michael Hurley and his wife Susan live near Charleston, South Carolina. Born and raised in Baltimore, Michael holds a degree in English from the University of Maryland and law from St. Louis University.

The Prodigal, Michael’s debut novel from Ragbagger Press, received the Somerset Prize for mainstream fiction and numerous accolades in the trade press, including Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, ForeWord Reviews, BookTrib, Chanticleer Reviews, and IndieReader. It is currently in development for a feature film by producer Diane Sillan Isaacs. Michael’s second novel, The Vineyard, is due to be released by Ragbagger Press on November 25, 2014.

Michael’s first book, Letters from the Woods, is a collection of wilderness-themed essays published by Ragbagger Press in 2005.  It was shortlisted for Book of the Year by ForeWord magazine.  In 2009, Michael embarked on a two-year, 2,200 mile solo sailing voyage that ended with the loss of his 32-foot sloop, the Gypsy Moon, in the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti in 2012. That voyage and the experiences that inspired him to set sail became the subject of his memoir, Once Upon A Gypsy Moon, published in 2013 by Hachette Book Group.

When he is not writing, Michael enjoys reading and relaxing with Susan on the porch of their rambling, one-hundred-year-old house.  His fondest pastimes are ocean sailing, playing piano and classical guitar, cooking, and keeping up with an energetic Irish terrier, Frodo Baggins.
