Author Interview Summer’s Shadow Tour

16 Mar
I’m interviewing Craig MacLachlan, author of YA novel “Summer’s Shadow”. Thanks for responding to my questions, Craig.

Author Interview

1) First, tell us about yourself – where you live, your family, and those sorts of details.
I live in Post Falls, Idaho. I have been married to my wife Christina for 18 years. We met in freshman year of high school and began dating at 15, so we’ve been together for 24 years. My great grandpa, Frank Liebig, was one of the first forest rangers in Glacier National park before it became a park. He lived there with his wife. My grandma and great aunts were born at Glacier. There is a book about him called The First Ranger. Let’s see, besides writing and reading, I love the outdoors. Hiking, exploring, picking wild berries and mushrooms, walking along creeks and lakes, camping and just enjoying everything nature has to offer.
2) How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing on and off since 3rd grade when I placed in a county-wide writing competition. I started writing full time with scripts and short stories 14 years ago. My first full length manuscript is Summer’s Shadow. I do also write screenplays still and have placed in 2 contests and have a short drama produced which can be seen online. I also am a Lovely Contributor for the website Your Zen Life.
3) Do you have a favorite place to write?
Not really. Anywhere is good for me, as long as there isn’t a lot of noise! Well, besides listening to music which totally inspires me.
4) Why did you decide to write Summer’s Shadow?
I decided to write Summer’s Shadow because the characters and story connected with me. The idea came from several sources, one a short adult fantasy I wrote many years ago and I decided to combine them and it just felt right. Everything just clicked.
5) Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
Even though I love Sierra Winters, the main character, I would have to go with Maven Kodiak. Characters that have a bad side to them, yet have vulnerability due to circumstances, are close to my heart. Writing an evil character with a sympathetic background is golden to me. Plus he’s just so darn cool!
6) How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?
Hmm, my least favorite character huh? That would have to be Molly. She’s a secondary character but she’s downright mean. I could pick Joe, who is also a secondary character, but I’ll go with Molly. You just want to wring the cruelty out of her when she does make her appearances in the story.
7) Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?
I do after I write a rough draft. After that I like to have Beta Readers give me pointers on structure, plot, characterization and any grammar issues they come across. After that I’ll revise and then it’s up to an editor and me to go back and forth. I have learned, editing your own material over and over is a huge mistake and only creates further problems!
8)   Tell us what you’re working on at the moment.
Right now I’m working on book two, Fall’s Fury. I’m also revising a Young Adult Contemporary mystery I’ll be querying to agents soon. Finishing up a YA thriller also and doing some side screenplay projects.
