Author Interview with Dielle Ciesco

22 Dec

We’re interviewing Dielle Ciesco, author of inspirational novel “The Unknown Mother” today. She’s touring her novel as we speak. Thank you for answering our questions, Mrs. Ciesco.

1)      First, tell us about yourself – where you live, your family, and those sorts of details.
I currently live in Asheville, NC where I’ve been since 2003. But that’s all about to change…mostly as a result of writing this book! I met and fell in love with my book’s designer, Stuart Davies, on Facebook about 4 months after my book was published. How’s that for kismet? We were married in September. He lives in France so I’ll be joining him there. And for the past 8 or 9 years, I’ve had a practice here working with clients with sound healing, vocal toning ( and Transformational Voicework ( Fortunately and thanks to the miracle of technology, I’ll still be able to work with people via Skype no matter where we land. No pets. No kids. I’m not very traditional.

2)      How long have you been writing?

Since I learned how. : ) I’ve always loved to do it. I never really thought of it as a possible profession, but I’m very glad that I now find myself a published author and editor. Words are one of my favorite tools; they are so much fun to string together in my attempts to express the inexpressible. They are my friends, my comfort, my challenge, and my creative partners.

3)      Do you have a favorite place to write?

No, not really. Ironically, much of my The Unknown Mother was written while I was working for someone else…but don’t tell my ex-boss! So, as long as I have a decent computer and a quiet space, I’m good to go.

4)      Why did you decide to write The Unknown Mother?

I needed to write it for myself. I needed a way to integrate everything I’ve learned on my spiritual journey working with sacred sound and Toltec shamanism. I’ve been through some pretty amazing experiences; in fact, my life now would be totally unrecognizable to the person I once was. I know I’m not the only person out there who longs for personal transformation and freedom, and because I know that the tools I learned work, I naturally wanted to share them with others. With a natural inclination toward writing, a book seemed the best way to do that.

5)      Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

There are really only two characters in my book, but I think my favorite would be the protagonist Wrenne. The goddess figure, Matrina, is eccentric and fun, but Wrenne is flesh and blood and redeemable. She has to work through her stuff, and that endears her to me. She’s also a bit of skeptic, like me, so she keeps things real in a book that presents some very challenging ideas.

6)      How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

I’m not sure how to answer this question having only two characters to choose from. But I can answer my least favorite aspect of Wrenne. She has a need to be right and to understand things. Typical qualities for many of us, but not qualities that make the difficult spiritual journey any easier. She does manage to break through this though into trust, and for that, I love her.

7)      Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?

For The Unknown Mother, I hired a friend, Mark Bloom, as my editor. Professional editing wasn’t cheap, but it was so worth it. I was able to present a very polished work to the publisher and learned a ton from Mark that made me a better writer…and editor…now. For my newest book, I’m relying on the publisher’s in-house editor.

8)   Tell us what you’re working on at the moment.
I’m very excited about my 2nd book, Your True Voice: A Transformational Journey through the 10 Gates of Sound, which was just accepted for publication by Anyi Books. It’ll be out sometime in mid 2014. Though it stands alone, it is really a companion to the first, a nonfiction counterpart. It pulls out a lot of the teachings and exercises that were interwoven into the story so that readers can have their own magical walk through the 10 Gates of Sound, and it also introduces the shamanic voicework I’ve been doing with clients. I’m very happy with it because I was able to entwine the magic of fiction along-side the non-fictional elements. Since not everyone can work with me, if readers want to delve deeper into the work, they’ll soon have a great tool to do that.
