Author: Sunayna Prasad

Genre: MG Fantasy

Twelve-year-old Alyssa McCarthy can no longer stand the toughness of her uncle and wants a better life. But one day she discovers not only the existence of magic, but also a villain hunting her down. The villain uses magic and magical technology to kidnap Alyssa to the Fiji Islands. As much as she wants to go home, she has to face some dangerous challenges first. Not only that, the villain himself must also be defeated. Can Alyssa succeed, even with the help of her mentors?

I decided to give this story a shot after hosting the excerpt last month. It wasn’t what I expected. The story was cute, but it wasn’t much more tan that. The main character, Alyssa, has had a tough life so far. She never believed magic existed, but now she is forced to believe in it while evidence piles up and she’s kidnapped to the Fiji Islands.

My pet peeve were: the writing. The book could’ve used another read-through. Everyone tells Alyssa everything she needs to know at exactly the right time. Too many coincedences. The villain is one-dimensional.

Alyssa is a likeable character, but the secondary characters were all a bit dull.

Overall: it was an enjoyable read, but I only liked it, not loved it.
